SPEED

East Coast surfers especially appreciate the importance of speed. Try doing a round house cut back at half speed or cranking a bottom turn while your surfboard begins to slow down. It is not only frustrating, it can also be, according to the most simple physics, impossible.

How do you get speed? Well, it is dependent on several things. If it is a powerful wave, speed can come from the ocean. If it is mush, you need to find it somewhere else. My philosophy is that every board should be built for speed. If you don’t need the extra mph because there is tremendous wave power then it is easy to put on the brakes and decrease the speed.

It is impossible, however, to do the inverse. If you build a board with extreme rocker and lack of float, it may work in extremely individualized and specific situations, but it will more often than not frustrate the rider and lessen the overall quality and satisfaction of the experience.
